“All our patents belong to you”

Revolutionary: The US electric car manufacturer Tesla has declared its commitment to transparency. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, announced in a blog entry that all the company’s patents are being made publicly available and he invited competitors in the electric vehicle sector to make use of the technology pioneered by the Californian company.

Tesla would not initiate patent-related lawsuits against anyone who wanted to use the company’s technology in good faith, said Musk. With this surprising step Tesla hopes to advance the development of electric vehicles. Musk pointed out that the patents were originally registered in an attempt to prevent big car manufacturers from copying Tesla’s technology and overwhelming the company. Unfortunately the opposite occurred, and the electric car programmes of major manufacturers constitute an average of less than one percent of all vehicles sold.
