Issue 4/2013: Solar storage - Who needs it?

These days, we regularly hear that electricity storage solutions of all shapes and sizes are crucial to making the switch to renewables. However, when people start to zone in on one particular aspect of the massive task of moving towards a future powered by clean energy, there is always the danger that this will turn into a pseudo-discussion. Asking whether we really need storage solutions for solar energy as part of our cover story is designed to be provocative. The answer, as given at, say, this year’s Intersolar , would appear to be a resounding “yes”. But there might be a catch.
